The increasing proliferation of electrification, automatisation and digitisation, are trends that are shaping industries and societies all over the globe. In the era of the technological revolution, the transportation industry will be one of the most affected by innovation. New technologies will change the way people live, consume and work, commute and use private or public transportation. Numerous governments, companies and various organisations are already well prepared for the new paradigm shift in the global economy. Nevertheless, the transition to a new connected and sustainable future is dynamic, requiring continuous exchange of ideas and guidance.

Austria’s transportation industry accounts for 7.7% of GDP, with an average R&D rate of 12%. In spite of being vital for the Austrian economy, transportation is important for the entire European economy. Austria has been running national transportation related research programmes for several years, which have been effectively combined with relevant research and technology programmes of the European Union.
